Ledbury’s Saturday Evening of Grasstrack took place at Hazle Meadows on 13 June.  The weather was a bit dull and wet as practice started but improved enough to provide us with some great racing.

The first on track were the 250cc Solos and two youngsters Callum Walker & Jed Collins finished one and two in the first heat ahead of Tim Grieg. In the second heat Chris Johnson beat another youngster Max Brown.  In the second leg wins went to Collins and Johnson ahead of Joe Nicholls and Walker respectively. In the third leg Collins completed a hat-trick of heat wins and Walker took up a second. Collins missed the start in the final but chased and came past a number of riders, but when passing Johnson, Johnson fell and Collins was excluded. Despite a protest Collins missed the rerun and Walker went on to take the win from Johnson and Greig.

In the Uprights, Stephen Maile took heat one from Vincent Priestley, and Tim Curnock sped away to take the win from Andy Gomm. The second leg saw wins from Vaughan and Curnock, and the third saw Curnock complete a hat-trick and Vaughan take a second heat win. In the final Curnock went away to take an easy win from Gomm and Luke Cox.

Tom Perry led the way in the 350cc, just weeks away from the British Championship, in the four leg class. He won heat one ahead of Barry Powell and Luke Harris. Leg two finished in the same order. In leg three Powell fell heavily whilst lying second and was taken away by ambulance. Perry took the win from Harris and Connor Locke. In the fourth leg Perry was a non-starter and Harris took the win from Locke and Martin French. Harris took overall first place, with Perry and French second and third.

The Pre 75s were the next to make an appearance and in the first of four scoring heats Gerald Short took the win from Roger Taylor and Adrian Vaughan. In the second leg, Taylor took the win from Vaughan as Short was a non–starter. In the third Short took his second win from Taylor. In the fourth leg a third win went to Short from Taylor, but Taylor got the overall win. Luke Cox finished third in the fourth heat but was excluded from the results as he was not entered in the class.

Coming to the line in race seven were the 500cc Sidecars and an all-day battle ensued between Barrie Bennett & Eifion Hughes and Dan Berwick & Mark Hopkins. At the end of the four heats the Welsh boys took the win having won three of the heats. Berwick & Hopkins took the fourth leg. Third went to Keith Richards & Glyn Fletcher with three third places.

The big solos class, 500cc, were next to make an appearances and James Wright confident after his Bridgwater success took the first heat from Josh Dingle. The spectacular James Shanes won heat two from Tom Perry. Perry took success in the next heat from Rob Finlow and Dave Rowlands. The meeting between Wright and Shanes everyone was waiting for came in race 20 and we weren’t let down. Wright got away and Shanes chased him every inch but just couldn’t get to the Stockport based Wright. They came face to face again in race 30 and again Wright got the lead but this time Wright picked up some drive and had to lay the bike down before going into the ropes at speed. That brought his day to end with an arm injury. Shanes won the re-run from Perry, and Zach Wajtknecht won from Ben Millichap. In the final Shanes went away from the rest with Rob Finlow taking second from Perry. Bring on Wimborne!

The big chairs were last out and it was the Goudge brothers show, as they ran riot and won the three heats and the final with ease. It’s great to see the guys back and confident. Other heat winners on the day were Simon Heal & Jay Perkins, Peter Lloyd & Fraser Sutherland and Joe Mogg & Jake Cutler and it was great to see Heal & Perkins walk away from their third leg spill.
